Two-Hinged Parabolic Arch

Two-Hinged Parabolic Arch enables direct measurement of the horizontal abutment thrust using a simple model for study and comparison with theoretical analysis.

Description

Two-Hinged Parabolic Arch. The equipment allows direct measurement of the horizontal component of the abutment thrust of a two hinged parabolic arch by using a simple model. It is to be used with ST300 Universal Structural Frame (separately supplied).

A parabolic arch of uniform cross-section has one end of the arch on a fixed hinged pin and the other is on bearings on a horizontal force support.

The horizontal movement of the roller end is monitored by a dial indicator. Measurement of horizontal thrust by the roller end is by using a pulley and a load hanger.

Instruction manual is also included.

TYPICAL EXPERIMENTS
  • Demonstration of the characteristics of a two-pinned arch
  • Examination of the relationship between applied loads and horizontal thrust
  • Comparison of behavior to simplified theory
