Bending Moment in a Frame

This equipment allows measurement of strain hence bending moment along the length of the vertical and horizontal members of a rectangular portal frame. It is to be used with ST300 Universal Structural Frame (separately supplied).

Strain gauges are fixed at equal distance along the frame members, 8 on the horizontal member and 4 on each vertical member. Both vertical legs of the frame can be clamped to ST300 Universal Structural Frame. Loads can be applied on the horizontal and/or vertical members and/or removable moment arm of the frame. Strains on the frame can be measured by the strain indicator. Bending moment at each strain gauge can be calculated from the strain and compared with the theoretical value.

Instruction manual is also included.

TYPICAL EXPERIMENTS
  • Relationship between measured strain and bending moment.
  • Elastic bending of portal frames and linear relationship between the bending moments in the frame and the load.
  • Bending moments for internal and external moments on vertical members
  • Comparison of ideal and non-ideal structures
